Final thought

Driver Standards: We have had an up and down year regarding driver standards. It seems the vast majority don’t know how to keep their eyes up and looking beyond the car in front, or making poor positional decisions, or just driving with no regard for fellow competitors. This last one applies to drivers trying to make pass and Drivers whom are about to be passed.

I’ve heard explanations and excuses. I’ve heard from angry and disgruntled drivers. I’ve been told it is only the reverse grid race (which it certainly isn’t). It’s always the other driver and virtually everyone is not willing to take responsibility.

We (the committee and even a few long standing and respected drivers) have done our best to deal with incidents and Driver standards. However, we often have no evidence to prove fault and advice seems to fall on deaf ears.

What I haven’t heard. Not once. Is a constructive and well thought out idea on how to handle this issue.

So I’m challenging you. Tell us how hard you want us to be.

One solution could be that any cars showing damage after a race get sent home. Regardless of fault. Thoughts? This would be an extreme measure. But if that’s what you want, that’s what we shall do.

Just remember one thing. If you ask for it. Don’t be disappointed or get frustrated if you fall foul of it later.

I ask you to take your time and think about this.

Just note that a format change won’t stop the majority of incidents. It’s only an attitude shift that will do it.

Important rule information (E30) and Ticket and Payment info (everyone)

Good Evening to you all.

This email contains:

  • E30 Series Regulation Clarification and reminders
  • Tickets for the round
  • Round Payments

E30 Series Regulation Clarification and reminders

We would like to bring some clarification to the legality of extra ducting to parts of the engine bay. We have had a few cases crop up during the season and would like to make it clear to you all the position of the race series.

Ducting or guiding air in the engine bay is not permitted. (Not including the permitted modifications for air into the AFM)

For example: A duct running air from the front of the car to the intake manifold “for the purpose of cooling the manifold” is not allowed.

Remember the following statement from the BMW E30 Regulations

Competitors must assume that unless a modification is specifically permitted, then it is prohibited.

A few another things to note are:

Body/Chassis and Brake Ducting

Relevant regulations are;

3.1 Required Equipment / Modifications:

  1. a) The chassis design and material must remain as standard. Lightening or reducing chassis strength is prohibited. Additional strengthening of the chassis is prohibited (e.g. seam welding). The chassis as produced by the manufacturer with the original material must be retained in all aspects in respect of material, thickness and contour. For the benefit of doubt, chassis is defined here to include the body shell, wings, doors, bonnet, boot-lid, roof, panels, floor and all bumper bars and support devices.

9 – BRAKES

9.2 Modifications permitted:

  1. f) To improve front and rear brake cooling the removal of OEM splash guards / backing plates only is allowed. Also allowed for brake cooling is the addition of ducting, but this cannot be designed in any way which would otherwise enhance aerodynamics.

So as long as no additional holes are drilled, brake ducting can use any existing orifice, obvious choice being the OEM brake ducts or driving lamp holes.

Steering Columns and Body parts

Another thing to note are the lowering of steering columns, something not allowed for in our regulations. Also the requirement to have the front lip on each model.

Modifications permitted, but not mandated:

  1. i) Power assisted steering may be disabled or replaced with an E30 non power steering rack, but all other steering components must be retained in their standard form, as per 3.1b.

3.1 Required Equipment / Modifications:

  1. b) Except as specifically permitted within these regulations, the steering system including rack, tie rods, front sway bar, steering arms and column shall remain as standard E30 fitment.

  1. e) A genuine BMW E30 lower lip on the front panel is mandatory on all models. This item must be correct for each particular model EG facelift or pre-facelift.

Fuel Reg reminder

5.4 Fuel System

  1. e) Only fuel with an octane rating between 91 and 98 is permitted. It must be commercially available from a New Zealand service station forecourt pump.

Ethanol or alternative Bio Fuels, E85 etc are not permitted.

  1. f) Fuel must be used as purchased – no fuel additives are permitted.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us or raise it with your driver delegate Ian Power.

Hampton Downs Tasman Revival 14-15th Jan 2017

Well another Tasman Revival at Hampton Downs is complete. Mixed weather but some great racing. I hope you all enjoyed it. Apologies to those of you hoping for a BBQ on Saturday. But the early finishing time we had saw it not make much sense as most wanted to head home.

Thanks to all of you for making this a great event.

Provisional Points for the round are attached and will be finalised after the next committee meeting.

Endurance Round 1 Race Results

The results for this event have been asked to be reviewed. Some quirky things have occurred that have been brought to our attention. We shall discuss this at the next committee meeting and inform you all regarding any decisions made.

Taupo Entries

Taupo Entry will be up on www.motorsportentry.com shortly.  Keep checking this week. We shall also let you know as soon as it’s up! Please note that we are on Friday through Sunday.

Incidents

This is a call for any Incidents you wish us to review from the Tasman Revival Hampton Downs 14-15th Jan 2017.

As always, we request you please send a clear description of the incident, race number, lap and those involved with your footage to us by 4pm on Friday the 20th of January 2017.

Final thoughts

Please remember to thank Race organisers, Officials and Volunteers during the race weekends. It means a lot to them to hear it from competitors. It’s considered a thankless task. Let us be the race series that changes that.

Also, it was good to hear that competitors were talking more and guiding newer competitors. We want to be a series that helps educate the rookies (and even the long running drivers). So remember, if you think someone you were driving against was a bit “loose” or “un-aware”, go and have a polite chat and talk about the event. Because unless they are told about it they will never change. Graham Ball was a good example of this on the weekend.

Well done Graham for helping a new driver expand his knowledge.

Endurance Round Supplementary Regs – Important

This email contains:

  • Supp Regs for the endurance round- Pit stops rules etc.
  • Endurance Series- Round One Hampton Downs 11th DEC entry
  • Final Thought

Supplementary Regs for Endurance Series- Round One Hampton downs 11th DecFull Supp Regs attached. You will, of course, have read these already.  But see below part of them.

    1. BMW 1-Hour Enduro Races
      • Competitors – a minimum of one (1) and a maximum of two (2) drivers are required for each competing vehicle.  Both drivers must complete the entry process, either on-line or manually, but only one entry fee is payable per car.  Both drivers must complete documentation and they must both attend the driver’s briefing. NB: Cross-entries are not permitted – each driver may only be entered in one car per BMW race group.  However, subject to completion of the relevant entry forms and paying the entry fees, it is permissible for a driver to enter both the E30 and Open Class races.
      • Practice/Qualifying – two 10-minute practice sessions will be run for each BMW race group.  Each driver must complete at least 3 laps in one of the sessions for their group.  In the case of the two-driver entries, only one driver shall participate in each practice session.  In all cases, the best time achieved by a vehicle in either session shall be used to determine the starting grid for the race.  Drivers who have not completed the 3-lap minimum may only participate in the race with the permission of the Clerk of the Course.
      • Race format – using the grid positions determined above, a standing start will take place.  Based on the average lap times, the starter will show the “Last Lap” board at an estimated time one lap before the completion of the one hour.  After the completion of the one hour, at the next passing of the lead car, the starter shall wave the chequered flag to the entire field.
      • Pit Stop – During the race, a minimum of one (1) pit stop must be made by each competing vehicle.  This pit stop must be made between twenty (20) and forty (40) minutes of the race duration and is not permitted under Red Flag conditions.  During this pit stop, either:
          1. a driver change is to be made, or
          2. the driver must exit the car, complete a full circuit of the car and re-enter.Where a driver change is made, the incoming driver must be positioned at the front passenger door of the vehicle. The outgoing driver must exit the vehicle, proceed around the vehicle to the front passenger door and “tag” the replacement driver, who shall then continue the circuit of the car (in the same direction as the outgoing driver) before entering the vehicle.

Refuelling – This is permitted during the race, and all entrants and team pit crew are to be familiar with the “Motorsport NZ Code of Practice for Motorsport Fuel – Storage and Handling”, which may be viewed on the MSNZ website. NB: All refuelling crew (and all other pit crew working within three (3) metres of the refuelling point) shall wear fireproof overalls, balaclava and gloves.  Each team refuelling during the race shall have a dedicated fire marshal wearing the safety gear prescribed above, with a fully serviced operable dry chemical fire extinguisher of no less than 9kg capacity.  This person’s sole responsibility is to man the fire extinguisher and this person cannot take part in any other job during refuelling. If a “Dry Break” system is being used, other work may be performed on the vehicle during refuelling.  For all other refuelling systems, no work other than a driver change may take place on the car during refuelling.Endurance Series- Round One Hampton downs 11th DecAs Mentioned previously – Entry for the first round of the BMW Race Driver Series Endurance Championship on 11th DEC is Now Open Things to note if you are sharing the drive:

  • Your co-driver must have a MSNZ License
  • Your co-driver must be a member of a car club

Same format as last year with two 10m practice sessions, an 8-lap sprint race and a 1-hour endurance race – all for $325.  Any of you who have entered any of TACCOC’s previous two events (Oct 8th HD & Nov 27th Puke) may be eligible for a cash back of up to $100 – to be paid out on the day. Please select the correct listing on www.motorsportentry.co.nz , as there are three separate events showing that day – one for trial, one for sprint races and one for BMW Race Series.  Second drivers should also enter in the same way, including the vehicle details, which are use to make up the “teams”.  There is an option for you to select “2nd driver”, which drops the entry fee from $325 down to just $40, which covers the Health & Safety Levy (from HD) and a small administration charge from TACCOC.  Fortunately, you do not have to pay the MNZ participation levy of $53, which is payable per entry rather than per driver. Hope that all makes sense. This was a hell of a lot of fun last season and can’t see why it would different this season.Get your entries in ASAP for the last event of 2016!!! If you have any questions, please feel free to email: treasurer@taccoc.co.nz Or contact us bmwraceseries@hotmail.com Final thoughtDid I mention: GET YOUR ENTRIES IN FOR THE ONE HOUR!!!!!!For my sanity, please do this sooner rather than later JSee you all Sunday.Regards,Nikolas GladiadisSecretaryCastrol BMW Race Driver Series

Endurance Series- Round One Hampton downs 11th DecEntry for the first round of the BMW Race Driver Series Endurance Championship on 11th DEC is Now Open Same format as last year with two 10m practice sessions, an 8-lap sprint race and a 1-hour endurance race – all for $325. If you have any questions, please feel free to email: treasurer@taccoc.co.nz Or contact us bmwraceseries@hotmail.com Final thoughtConflict and resolving it.One way to resolve most issues comes from discussing racing incidents directly with the party or parties involved. Just remember to take a few deep breaths first and be prepared to find out that you may, in-fact, have been in the wrong.I suggest the following:

  • We have Driver Delegates for all classes. Please go see them first for advice.
  • Follow through with that advice and talk to the other driver (with the Driver delegate present if you wish)
  • If you aren’t satisfied with the result to that point. Find the CRO of the meeting and make a formal protest.

I feel that not enough direct communication is being had regarding race incidents. The only communication is to the Committee and often in the week following. It is, in-fact better to have these conversations immediately. At the track.I (not we) would and have, talked with those I hit (yes, I’ve made mistakes) or those that have hit me. And I stress the “talked with” part. It was always a two-way conversation. Those same drivers have given me advice (and I them) and we’ve discussed the how’s and why’s, thus gaining experience. These same drivers are now friends. Please remember, we rely on each one of you to help manage this series that we are so passionate about.Regards,Nikolas GladiadisSecretaryCastrol BMW Race Driver Series
