Final thought

Driver Standards: We have had an up and down year regarding driver standards. It seems the vast majority don’t know how to keep their eyes up and looking beyond the car in front, or making poor positional decisions, or just driving with no regard for fellow competitors. This last one applies to drivers trying to make pass and Drivers whom are about to be passed.

I’ve heard explanations and excuses. I’ve heard from angry and disgruntled drivers. I’ve been told it is only the reverse grid race (which it certainly isn’t). It’s always the other driver and virtually everyone is not willing to take responsibility.

We (the committee and even a few long standing and respected drivers) have done our best to deal with incidents and Driver standards. However, we often have no evidence to prove fault and advice seems to fall on deaf ears.

What I haven’t heard. Not once. Is a constructive and well thought out idea on how to handle this issue.

So I’m challenging you. Tell us how hard you want us to be.

One solution could be that any cars showing damage after a race get sent home. Regardless of fault. Thoughts? This would be an extreme measure. But if that’s what you want, that’s what we shall do.

Just remember one thing. If you ask for it. Don’t be disappointed or get frustrated if you fall foul of it later.

I ask you to take your time and think about this.

Just note that a format change won’t stop the majority of incidents. It’s only an attitude shift that will do it.

Final thought

Car presentation has been on a serious decline this season. And don’t think we haven’t noticed. It has been mentioned in previous emails that the standard needs to improve. Please note, that points can be removed if the committee decide your car is not up to a high enough standard.

How to tell:

Stand 10 feet away from your car.

If it looks good, can’t see damage, bad paint, etc., you’re ok.

If you are 10-15 feet from your car and you think it’s rough. It is. Please sort this ASAP.

We aren’t after perfection just a better standard than most.

Important rule information (E30) and Ticket and Payment info (everyone)

Good Evening to you all.

This email contains:

  • E30 Series Regulation Clarification and reminders
  • Tickets for the round
  • Round Payments

E30 Series Regulation Clarification and reminders

We would like to bring some clarification to the legality of extra ducting to parts of the engine bay. We have had a few cases crop up during the season and would like to make it clear to you all the position of the race series.

Ducting or guiding air in the engine bay is not permitted. (Not including the permitted modifications for air into the AFM)

For example: A duct running air from the front of the car to the intake manifold “for the purpose of cooling the manifold” is not allowed.

Remember the following statement from the BMW E30 Regulations

Competitors must assume that unless a modification is specifically permitted, then it is prohibited.

A few another things to note are:

Body/Chassis and Brake Ducting

Relevant regulations are;

3.1 Required Equipment / Modifications:

  1. a) The chassis design and material must remain as standard. Lightening or reducing chassis strength is prohibited. Additional strengthening of the chassis is prohibited (e.g. seam welding). The chassis as produced by the manufacturer with the original material must be retained in all aspects in respect of material, thickness and contour. For the benefit of doubt, chassis is defined here to include the body shell, wings, doors, bonnet, boot-lid, roof, panels, floor and all bumper bars and support devices.

9 – BRAKES

9.2 Modifications permitted:

  1. f) To improve front and rear brake cooling the removal of OEM splash guards / backing plates only is allowed. Also allowed for brake cooling is the addition of ducting, but this cannot be designed in any way which would otherwise enhance aerodynamics.

So as long as no additional holes are drilled, brake ducting can use any existing orifice, obvious choice being the OEM brake ducts or driving lamp holes.

Steering Columns and Body parts

Another thing to note are the lowering of steering columns, something not allowed for in our regulations. Also the requirement to have the front lip on each model.

Modifications permitted, but not mandated:

  1. i) Power assisted steering may be disabled or replaced with an E30 non power steering rack, but all other steering components must be retained in their standard form, as per 3.1b.

3.1 Required Equipment / Modifications:

  1. b) Except as specifically permitted within these regulations, the steering system including rack, tie rods, front sway bar, steering arms and column shall remain as standard E30 fitment.

  1. e) A genuine BMW E30 lower lip on the front panel is mandatory on all models. This item must be correct for each particular model EG facelift or pre-facelift.

Fuel Reg reminder

5.4 Fuel System

  1. e) Only fuel with an octane rating between 91 and 98 is permitted. It must be commercially available from a New Zealand service station forecourt pump.

Ethanol or alternative Bio Fuels, E85 etc are not permitted.

  1. f) Fuel must be used as purchased – no fuel additives are permitted.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us or raise it with your driver delegate Ian Power.

Hampton Downs Tasman Revival 14-15th Jan 2017

Well another Tasman Revival at Hampton Downs is complete. Mixed weather but some great racing. I hope you all enjoyed it. Apologies to those of you hoping for a BBQ on Saturday. But the early finishing time we had saw it not make much sense as most wanted to head home.

Thanks to all of you for making this a great event.

Provisional Points for the round are attached and will be finalised after the next committee meeting.

Endurance Round 1 Race Results

The results for this event have been asked to be reviewed. Some quirky things have occurred that have been brought to our attention. We shall discuss this at the next committee meeting and inform you all regarding any decisions made.

Taupo Entries

Taupo Entry will be up on www.motorsportentry.com shortly.  Keep checking this week. We shall also let you know as soon as it’s up! Please note that we are on Friday through Sunday.

Incidents

This is a call for any Incidents you wish us to review from the Tasman Revival Hampton Downs 14-15th Jan 2017.

As always, we request you please send a clear description of the incident, race number, lap and those involved with your footage to us by 4pm on Friday the 20th of January 2017.

Final thoughts

Please remember to thank Race organisers, Officials and Volunteers during the race weekends. It means a lot to them to hear it from competitors. It’s considered a thankless task. Let us be the race series that changes that.

Also, it was good to hear that competitors were talking more and guiding newer competitors. We want to be a series that helps educate the rookies (and even the long running drivers). So remember, if you think someone you were driving against was a bit “loose” or “un-aware”, go and have a polite chat and talk about the event. Because unless they are told about it they will never change. Graham Ball was a good example of this on the weekend.

Well done Graham for helping a new driver expand his knowledge.

Tasman Revival Hampton Downs January 14-15th Entries

We seem to only have 4 people at present wanting to race at this meeting.

Please get your entries in now or we shall be at risk of being bumped out of this event if entries are not forthcoming.

The Entry for the January Tasman Revival at Hampton Downs is up on www.motorsportentry.com

Enter these as soon as possible please. Leaving entry to the last-minute or after Cut-Off causes lots of headaches. Including potential removal from the round or the combining of grids. Please help us deliver what you deserve by entering LONG BEFORE the cut-off date.

Myths and Rumours

There seems to be a few myths and rumours flying around at present. Some about format changes. Some about Heavy Penalties being needed, and a few others.

A couple of points here.

Point one:

The formats will not be changing as the evidence suggests the issue with light to moderate panel damage would still occur.  PANEL DAMAGE is happening in all the E30 races. If you think that removing the reverse grid will get rid of the issue. YOU ARE WRONG. The only way panel damage will reduce in frequency is if EVERYONE gives more room and thinks more about self-preservation. That includes the car in the lead of an overlap who all too often this year, gives no space. (When under MSNZ rules, they should provide space) And then blames the other driver.

Point two:

Heavy penalties are hard to enforce when we have only been asked to investigate 10 incidences this season so far (Not all E30). Most of those had little support (Video), to be able to take action. Those we have good information and video on have been assessed and penalties have been given.

Before you get upset at what is being said here, consider a couple of things.

  • The committee and driver delegates are not omnipotent. We cannot see every incident on track or magically figure out how the incident occurred simply by looking at the damage and having a worked-up driver tell us their story. If they talk to us at all. (And if I’m honest, I’ve been guilty of thinking I was in the right until I looked at the video. Then calmed down because I may not have been as “in the right’ as I thought I was)
  • Rumours do not get rules or formats changed. It is impossible to change either in this way during the season.  For the record, it can in fact be done. But I’m unaware of a single person asking me or any other Committee member what would have to happen to have a change made. Let alone send in a request to question if it can be done

Myths and rumours hurt the race series. This is the only truth. Please direct your requests, concerns and questions to the Race series. Unless it’s on record what do you expect us to do? We are not a faceless group that don’t care. We all care very much about this series. This is why those on the committee volunteered to assist in its operation. I ask you all to remember that.

I guess I’m saying in general terms. Before you point the finger of blame. Be sure it was not something you could have changed the outcome of yourself.

If you want to see change. Ask or Ask how.

Just don’t talk to everyone but your committee and expect change. Because you will be nothing but disappointed. We are here to help if you give us the chance.

Final thought

Have a great Christmas/ New Year’s break!!!!!
