Season Update #4.‏

Hello all,We trust that you’ve all had sufficient time to undertake any repairs resulting from Round 1 at Hampton Downs and are now ready to start planning for Round 2 of the 2015-2016 CASTROL BMW Race Driver Serieswhich will be held as part of the “SOUND” MG Classic Meeting at Manfeild on Friday 13th – Sunday 15th November 2015.“SOUND” MG CLASSIC.Yes, as part of their 30th Anniversary celebrations this year see’s this event run over three days, with testing held from 9.00am to lunch time Friday and qualifying from lunch time onwards for all classes attending. Followed by racing on Saturday / Sunday.
Some of the other classes attending will be Historic Racing Cars, Historic Touring Cars, Pre 65’s, F5000 and Central Muscle Cars.This year we have been tentatively given 2 x E30 grids, to make this happen E30 COMPETITORS PLEASE SEND YOUR ENTRIES IN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.Supplementary Regulations and Meeting Entry Form is enclosed above.2015-2016 MEETING SCHEDULE.Also enclosed you will find a confirmed list of all meetings that make up the 2015-2016 CASTROL BMW Race Driver Series Championship.
NOTE:February 6th – 7th 2016 TRS Taupo Round is a Non-Championship Round with 1 x grid only for BMW Open A, B and 2.0 Litre Class Cars.April 16th – 17th 2016 TIER 1 Summer Series at Pukekohe is the Final Round of the Championship for BMW Open A, B competitors.
All other classes finish with the HRC Legends Of speed meeting at Hampton Downs in April as their final round.
ENDURANCE:For this season we have also secured 2 x dates for the running of a separate 1 Hour Endurance Series.The format for this will be confirmed at a later date, but will include practice / qualifying and a separate 1 hour event for E30 plus another for Open A, B and 2.0 Litre competitors.TOYO TYRES.
After several years of  stable pricing recent price alterations from the TOYO factory and the devaluation of the NZ dollar means that from October 30th there will be new pricing from NATIONWIDE to the BMW Race Driver Series on their TOYO range of tyres.
As this price doesn’t come into effect until the 30th of October you still have 4 weeks to purchase any tyres at the old (current) prices.
IMPORTANT NOTE: E30 CLASS.
As from the 2016-2017 Season we will be moving to TOYO’s new R888’R DOT Semi Slick Tyre which becomes available later this year.
Please take a look at your stock of current TOYO R888’s, plan this season’s tyre use, and take advantage of TOYO’s current price offer on R888’s above.
(R888’R tyres cannot be used during the 2015 – 2016 season).

  1. CASTROL BMW E30 SCHOLARSHIP / RACE SERIES TRACK DAY.

Enclosed above you will find the “TEST DAY INDEMNITY FORM”. To save valuable time Saturday morning; Please print this out, fill this in, and bring the completed form to the track with you. And please remember, this is a test day NOT A RACE DAY, you will be on track with our E30 scholarship participants while they undergo their driver evaluation. The best introduction to our series is probably not through being undertaken into turn 1 by four cars while trying to take in guidance from your driving instructor! We’ll clarify which cars to be particularly aware of during our drivers briefing at the start of the day.

  1. E30 CLASS SCRUTINEERING.

This “pre-season” E30 scrutineering day is used to visually check and seal some of the control components as outlined in our E30 Race Series Technical Regulations. This day will take place at Corporate Academy Group’s (CAG) premises at 98 Kerrs Rd, Wiri, Auckland on Sunday the 30th August (following on from our Saturday “Track Day”). Please ensure that all holes required for sealing have been drilled PRIOR TO ATTENDING this event. There are limited spots left in the 9.30 – 10.30am session and further available between 11.30am – 12.30pm and 1.30pm – 2.30pm. Welcome to the second e-mail of the 2015-2016 CASTROL BMW Race Driver Series Championship.

CASTROL BMW E30 Scholarship.
We have had another fantastic response to our second CASTROL BMW E30 scholarship drive, Andre Johnson Air Jordan Retro 5 launched at “Speedshow” in July.
We will again have our maximum capacity of 15 entrants on track at Hampton Downs ready for testing and evaluation on Saturday the 29th August.
#SKYSPEED camera’s will again be present to record this event for future TV showings.
REMEMBER:
This is a free CASTROL BMW Race Driver Series sponsored Track Day for all previous / current Race Series members with a lunch time BBQ also supplied.
Please come along and take advantage of this last chance test day prior to our first round for the season a fortnight later.
E30 Scrutineering.
As has been done in the past a “Pre-Season” E30 scrutineering day (check and seal) has been organized for Sunday the 30th August.
This follows on from our Track Day at Hampton Downs the previous day, allowing for our out of Auckland competitors to effectively “kill two birds with one stone”.

E30 Camber readings.
There has been a range of discussions circulating in regards to camber readings taken from the Top 5 E30 competitors following our final round at Hampton Downs.
For clarification, NIKE AIR FOOTSCAPE these readings were as follows;

    While something like camber can be either intentional or accidental (accident damage, ULTRA BOOST 2017 New Balance 373 męskie kerb hitting / bent struts) anything outside of regulation is subject to a penalty process, with these penalties appearing on our final season results.
    Interestingly, Nike Air Max 2016 Schoenen new balance uomo 2015 another batch of cars since checked also came up with all vehicles above 2.0 degrees with some close to 2.5 degrees both sides.
    So while the 2015-2016 Season Regulations have been changed to cover a maximum camber reading of 2.5 degrees please remember that due to racing stress / age of vehicles, Nike Marxman this can require regular checking throughout the season to remain compliant.
    Something definitely worth doing prior to the new season commencement.

    Round 1 Preview

    The first round of the 2015-2016 CASTROL BMW Race Driver Series Championship season is now almost upon us.
    If you are still planning to, but have yet to enter the HRC Icebreaker Meeting at Hampton Downs this weekend (12-13th September 2015)

    Our independent CASTROL BMW Race Driver Series drivers briefing will follow on from the official drivers briefing.
    We would expect this to start approx. 9.15-9.30am Saturday morning and will also be subject to the conclusion of the “new drivers” briefing which we have a number of new competitors attending.

    REMINDER 1.
    Round 2 of the 2015-2016 CASTROL BMW Race Driver Series is being held as part of the “SOUND” MG Classic Meeting at Manfeild on Friday 13th – Sunday 15th November 2015.
    This year we were able to tentatively secure 2 x E30 grids for this meeting, however, Cam Robinson Jersey to date, only 17 x E30 competitors have entered.
    To give us any chance of 2 x grids still happening we’ll need all outstanding E30 competitors who are planning to enter to get your entries in as soon as possible.
    Outstanding Open Class entries should also be sent in as soon as possible please.

    1 hour Enduro

    Hello all,
    Coming up on Sunday the 13th December is the first of our 1 Hour Endurance rounds.
    This is being held as part of TACCOC’s Christmas at the Downs event.
    This event is separate to our 2015-2016 Championship Season with points from this event going towards an Endurance Championship Award.
    Entry for this is now loaded onto the motorsport entry website: www.motorsportentry.com

    There are two entry points for this event – one for BMW Enduro and the other for all other classes, Tennessee Volunteers please ensure you choose the correct option.

    The entry fee for BMW Endurance drivers covers two 10-minute practice / qualifying sessions and the 60-minute race.

    Qualifying is to be split for 2 driver teams (see Supplementary Regulations enclosed).

    This entry fee compares favourably with the $325 fee charged for 1-hour entrants in the Mahindra Endurance Series.

    Vehicle eligibility is for all cars that comply with the current CASTROL BMW Race Driver Series individual class regulations.

    Second drivers in 2 x driver teams are not required to be current Castrol BMW Race Driver Series members (correct race licence and MSNZ affiliated club membership will still be required),

    NOTE:As published in the Supplementary Regulations re-fuelling is now allowed.

    On this note it’s probably timely for a reminder of the culture that we strive to maintain within the CASTROL BMW Race Driver Series.

    Please take the time to re-acquainting yourself with our Race Series Culture Document.

    1. E30 CLASS SCRUTINEERING.

    This will take place at Corporate Academy Group’s (CAG) premises at 98 Kerrs Rd, Wiri, Auckland on Sunday the 30th August.

    1. PRODUCTION CLASS.

    Following on from earlier correspondence on this topic, we are now at a point where a set of draft regulations has been formulated for the introduction a more “Production Based” class within our BMW Open A / B group of competitors.

    For the 2015-2016 season both Open Group A and Open Group B regulations remain unchanged.

    For competitors who would like to run this season with a vehicle compliant to these new regulations an updated set of these is also enclosed.

    While technically part of either the Open Group A or B class (subject the vehicle weight) and not a stand alone Championship this season, there will certainly be an acknowledgement of your achievements at next years prize giving dinner.

    If there is any part of these regulations you are unsure about, please ask.

    Round 3 MG Classic Manfeild Update.‏

    Hi all,

    Round 3 of the Castrol BMW Race Driver Series, being the MG Classic at Manfeild over the weekend of 15th – 16th November is almost upon us.
    As mentioned earlier our next two rounds (MG Classic Manfeild, NZ Festival of Motor Racing Hampton Downs)have a big “Classic Racing” aspect to them where close racing and non-contact is expected, so let’s all keep working towards making this our best seasons yet.

    For anyone still needing to enter, entry details and regulations for this event are enclosed above. Take your completed forms and payment with you (don’t post) as these will need to be processed on the day.

    You’ll also find enclosed individual class timetables (acceptance of entry) showing practice (qualifying) and race numbers.
    As our E30 group is first up Saturday morning our Castrol BMW Race Driver Series drivers briefing will preceed Manfeilds overall drivers briefing by half an hour.
    Expect a start time of 8.00am at the blue Castrol BMW Race Driver Series marquee.

    Round 3 MG Classic Manfeild

    Hi all,

    With barely the blink of an eye the first two rounds of the 2014-2015 Castrol BMW Race Driver Series have now been and gone.

    Thanks to all of you who managed to make it to the Taupo V8 SuperTourer event.

    As much as we try to hold off on any last minute changes to our calendar, and plan to allow plenty of recovery time between events, we’re sure you’ll all agree that this was certainly one event to make a last minute exception for.

    And with the V8 SuperTourers event at Taupo being televised, the Castrol BMW Race Driver Series was able to take advantage of this infrastructure being in place and organized for Sunday’s final race of each group to be recorded for broadcasting on TV 3’s CRC Motorsport.

    As soon as we know the program scheduling we’ll get this out to you.

    Further thanks must also go out to Jeff Storey who once again provided excellent on-track commentary for theBMW contingent during the SuperTourer round.

    With Round 3 of the Castrol BMW Race Driver Series being the MG Classic at Manfeild over the weekend of 15th – 16th November there’s a well earned seven week break since Taupo to get cars sorted for what should be another fast paced / action packed event.

    This year’s season has certainly got off to a fantastic start, with lots of good quality close racing action.

    Our next two rounds (MG Classic Manfeild, NZ Festival of Motor Racing Hampton Downs) have a big “Classic Racing” aspect to them where close racing and non-contact is expected.

    And while it’s not a “reliability trial” that we’re participated in, there’s still a few on-track incidents that could be improved upon.

    Please remember to ensure that when you’re in a racing predicament that sees your vehicle leave the track, your focus MUST BE on either stopping your vehicle in a safe place out of harms way, or carrying out a SAFE RE-ENTRYback onto the track.
    It is equally important to ensure that you are aware of your surroundings and DO NOT go racing into someone else’s incident.
    In most instances you’ll get notification of someone else’s incident through the flag marshal system, HOWEVERthis is not infallible, and can be greatly supplemented through the raising of ones eyes to ensure that you are not only aware of what is happening with the car directly in front of you, but also those further ahead and in a position to do greater harm.
    If you have created the opportunity for someone to get a run up alongside you, either going into or exiting a corner, then you most likely WILL NOT be able to run your normal race line into the next corner as you’ll be needing to give them some RACING ROOM.
    Be aware of where competitors are around you, scan your mirrors, if someone was right in behind you entering a corner and you’ve taken a tight line and now you can’t see them, they’re most likely on your outside, leave racing room EXITING the corner.
    Let’s all keep working towards making this one of our best seasons yet.

    2. MG Classic Manfeild 15-16th November.
    Entry details and regulations for this event are enclosed above. Please get your entries in ASAP to allow sufficient time for race groups to be formulated prior to the event.

    Again this year you have the option of using the new stadium for undercover pitting.

     The stadium will also be the location for our Saturday Race Series evening BBQ and Pie Fest (courtesy of Dad’s Pies).

     3. E30 Compliance.

    A couple of simple compliance requirements for the Series are;
    A) Sponsor logo’s
    B) OEM body mouldings etc.
    There have been a few vehicles competing this season which are not up to spec on these two requirements.
    If you call into this category please re-dress this before your next meeting.

    4. Open Group A / B.

    A number of members representing our Open Group A runners has started gathering to both promote involvement in this class and to help facilitate discussions with the Race Series Committee regards regulations / track breakouts etc.

    They’ll be getting in touch with all past and present Open A and B competitors to get feedback on how to grow this group of racers.

    As you’ll recall there was a decision made at this year’s AGM to re-assess the class splits within this group at a mid-year point to allow time for any rule changes to come into effect for our 2015-2016 season.

    To help get this underway we’ll have an initial draft concept of how things may look ? (based on earlier feedback) out for viewing and competitor response mid-November, which will allow plenty of time leading up to, and over, the Christmas / New Year break for thought’s on this topic.

     5. Class Representatives.

    Nominations for these positions was called for during our drivers briefing at Taupo and we’re pleased to confirm Andrew Walker as the new BMW 2.0 Litre Drivers Representative.

    Welcome on board Andrew.

    We’ll be looking for further nominations for other classes at Manfeild.

    V8 SuperTourer Taupo Review

    Well the second round of the 2014-2015 Castrol BMW Race Driver Series has been completed in what could become the most entertaining meeting of the season!
    Not only was there some good racing on-track, the off-track entertainment (that actually did end up on-track) was also entertaining.
    No doubt those responsible for the pit straight SsangYong banner haven’t ever tried to keep an Ezy-up in one piece in a Taupo gale before?
    As a “Race Series” we were quite fortunate to get through most of our races with only the occasional race distance shortening, in what became a “time sensitive” meeting due to TV commitments etc.
    Spare a thought for those that had their races cut short, or abandoned, as the previously mentioned SsangYong banner performed it’s kite surfing antics!

    Thanks need to go out to the SuperTourer meeting organisers for what turned out to be a well run event, the Taupo timing team ladies for their always helpful response to our never ending requests for race results etc and to Mike and Scott Delzel (weigh scales) and the Castrol BMW Race Driver Series members who also helped out over the weekend.

    And as we’ve become accustomed, thanks again to Tammy Cowan, her helpers, and “Dads Pies” for another well patronized Saturday evening BBQ.

    After this we’ll get the provisional results calculated and circulated.
    Our next meeting is the MG Classic at Manfeild over the weekend of 15th – 16th November.

    One final note:
    The TOYO discount cards handed out during Saturday’s drivers briefing applies to the full TOYO range, excluding the E30 Series control R888 tyre, which is already discounted to the class.
